In 2004 Orion Land and Leisure were appointed by Cardiff County Council to develop the 80-acre £300m Cardiff International Sports Village, the focal point in the 20 year regeneration of Cardiff Bay.

The development programme included obtaining a planning consent for:

  • £19m of remediation and revetment works
  • new roads, roundabouts, car-parking and cycle network
  • over 500,000 sq ft of commercial and leisure development
  • 1140 residential units
  • 230,000 sq ft of out of town retail use partly let to Morrisons and ToysRUs
  • 500 hotel bedrooms
  • public transport infrastructure
  • 50m Commonwealth Games standard Pool with Leisure Water, and 100 station fitness centre, crèche, bars and restaurants

The first phase of the development, the award winning and highly acclaimed international Pool was completed on time and on budget and opened on St Davids Day 2008. Since opening, nearly one million people a year are using the pool, it has become a favorite training facility for the Great Britain swimming team.

The development programme, infrastructure works and first phase took some six years to complete, during which time Orion and their partners, Laing O’Rourke Construction, formed a strong working relationship with Cardiff Council.

In March 2010 a White Water Rafting Centre was opened and the Sports Village development is on-going.
